Can Constipation Affect Your Period?

Constipation is a condition that occurs when there is poor bowel movement, thus one has problems passing stool. It is characterized by hardening of the feces. It occurs when the colon has too much water or when it is contracting too fast, leading to irregular bowel movement thus hardening the stool. In some cases, it may manifest as a sign of colon cancer.

For most women who have attained the child bearing age, the most frequently asked question is; can constipation affect your period? The answer in this case is yes it can. Constipation will affect your period flow by either prolonging or reducing the number of days that you have your periods.

When your colon is full, it compresses your uterine walls thus exerting pressure leading to constipation during your menstrual cycle. The prevention to this is eating foods that are rich in fibers such as fresh fruits and healthy vegetables. Alternatively, fiber supplements can suffice. To get an understanding about colon cleansers and get a review on several colon cleansers, read up on this report!

While many women feel constipated while on period, doctors recommend homemade remedies such as hot water and other fluids. Reducing cramps, which are common during a menstrual cycle, will minimize constipation significantly.

The problem of period constipation may also come with a lot of diarrhea as a result of hormonal imbalance. This causes significant pain in the ovaries during the ovulation period, which results in stomach bloating.

Some women also become uncomfortable a few days prior to their menses, feeling pain in the abdominal area. Constipation on period can also be accompanied by headaches, backaches, a lot of heavy bleeding which won’t go away easily resulting in feeling tired and moody throughout the day.

Monthly periods occurring with constipation can be regulated if one avoids stress which makes it easier for the body to get weak. When your body is stressed, digestion in your body slows down considerably and as a result, passing stool becomes difficult. This is also because some hormones are not produced fully to help in the digestion process. The bottom line is that you will feel constipated and therefore limit the menstrual flow.

Some other side effects on Period constipation are sluggishness as a result of the loss of iron in the body after menstruation has occurred. The condition can be corrected by having iron injections administered or simply take some vitamins to boost up your iron and vitamin levels again. Dr. Weil’s Vitamin Advisor – Get Your Recommendation Today!

Due to these hormonal changes in the body constipation and periods may arise at the same time for most women. This phenomenon arises after the body has lost a lot of blood and other fluids, used for other functions in the body, causing discomfort. Now may be the time to visit your gynecologist for a check-up as well as consider a proper balanced diet to bring your body back into shape.

Although some women prefer not to say anything when they have constipation, it is more recommendable to visit an expert who can give you proper advice on the treatment of constipation, so that ones menstrual cycle is not affected. It is also advisable to observe simple hygiene rules such as only eating food which is cooked to avoid infection, which in turn can cause constipation. Last not least coming back to the question: can constipation affect your period?…and you answer is – Constipation will not prevent a woman from having her periods; it only slows down and affects the whole cycle in one way or the other.

10 Most Common Fertility Questions

728x90_start_button_girl

The ability to become pregnant through normal sexual activity, conceive and have children is referred to as fertility. Most couple’s do not know much about fertility treatment and so they find themselves seeking answers to a number of questions, as it is challenging to deal with the situation and, a clear understanding of viable options is necessary. In this article, a list of questions that may be model to have answers to will hopefully ease some of the fears associated with fertility treatments.

When should a couple consider going for consultation in a fertility treatment centre?

Couples who are 35 years of age or younger and have no known fertility problems are recommended by most fertility experts to see a specialist, if fertility has not taken place after a year or more of well-timed intercourse.

When should a couple have sex for pregnancy?

Having sex during unsafe days will increase the chances of becoming pregnant, as well as having intercourse the day you are ovulating or immediately before ovulation.

How do I know am ovulating?

Ovulation occurs 15-19 days in a normal cycle. So if you have a regular cycle, then an approximate ovulation day is easy to calculate. Also, your body may give certain clues such as a sharp pain in the lower abdomen when an egg is released.

Is there a possibility of increasing sperm quality?

First and foremost, avoid smoking and alcohol consumption as it plays a big role in poor sperm production. Secondly, fertility options recommend wearing loose fitting undergarments as well as taking cool showers compared to hot baths to promote better sperm production.

When can you take a pregnancy test after IUI?

16 days from the last IUI is the best time to take a pregnancy test as one taken too early can result in a false positive.

How much does treatment cost?

Fertility treatment costs will vary depending on the centre you choose and the treatment protocol.

Are the chances of birth defects any higher because of fertility treatments?

It is still unknown whether using fertility treatments can increase the likelihood of birth defects but most studies show there is a slight increase in some birth defects such as cleft lips and malformed hearts. But still, this doesn’t confirm whether it’s due to the treatments or the root causes of infertility.

How do you choose a fertility treatment centre?

The international council on infertility information recommends seeking board approved M.D’s who have completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology with high success rates. In addition, support groups can provide information which is reputable.

For how long should one continue fertility treatments before looking into alternative solutions?

This is a personal choice depending on a number of aspects such as finances, age and also stress.

Should women start fertility treatments with regular OB on colloid?

Patients having difficulty in conceiving are highly recommended to consult a fertility treatment centre before beginning treatment. Most physicians prescribe colloid because it has a 12-cycle lifetime maximum usage. Fertility centers’ will run expansive tests, including testing of the male partner, in which there will be no need of using colloid altogether.

It may be hard to accept the reality that you are having complications in getting pregnant, but if determined to become a parent then the above information might be of help.

Many people around the world have an weight issue, meaning obesity which brings many problems to your body and personal well-being. Obesity puts an enormous strain on your organs and joints and as such is also responsible for cardiovascular diseases, elevated cholesterol levels, hypertension, heart attack and much more…Read this article here!

Scientists and research on a world wide scale have been working on solutions and programs to put an end to the problems of obesity. Many tablets and pills are already on the market to help people in their efforts to lose weight quickly and safely but the biggest concern is always how to find diet pills which are safe and work.

Research have used reviews from consumers to analyze the most effective and safest pills that one can use to lose weight and better their health. To begin with they listed all the factors which have to be considered to find the best diet pills. These include:

  • The effectiveness of the pills to lose the weight.
  • The time it takes for the pills to work given they are used as prescribed
  • The potential side effects the consumer is exposed to when using the drugs and the precautions different users have to look at. Naturally it is advisable to go for safe diet pills that work without any side effects.
  • Are the results long term or short term? What happens when you suddenly stop using a drug?…are there any unwanted side effects apart from weight gain?
  • Do the safe diet pills have a guarantee or not. Pills with a guarantee assure good results and are of high quality.
  • The price at which the product is sold. While price is always a factor to look at, it is not always true that the more expensive drug gives you the better result. At times, due to a tight purse string, one has to go for the cheaper option and it is then great to find a product that works and works well.

Taking these and other factors into consideration here is a list of some of the top five diet pills that work available on the market:

Phen375Phentermine hydrochloride -  An FDA approved drug also commonly known as an “anorectic” or “anorexigenic” because the primary function of drugs in this category for treating obesity are that of appetite suppression. Phentermine should be taken only for a short time, such as a few weeks  and together with diet and exercise to treat obesity in people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.  As with all medications, do not take this medicine with any other diet medications without your doctor’s advice.

Capsiplex Appetite Suppressor – It is one of the best safe diet pills recommended for use. It also contains natural ingredients that are clinically proven to assure good, fast results. Capsiplex Capsicum Extract gives users the maximum effectiveness of Capsaicinoids without Any Oral or Gastric Irritation thus providing the ability to burn fat faster hence add to quick weight loss.

Meratol – This is the number one carb blocker. This diet pill, safe and quite unique, is different from the rest as it does not only burn fats but also acts as an appetite suppressant. It doesn’t have any side effects when used and it achieves its anticipated results within a short period i.e. weight loss is experienced within a short period.

Unique Hoodia  and Caralluma Actives, both of which are also part of the best Appetite Suppressants, are the 4th and 5th recommended diet pills which one can use to achieve weight loss.

These are the top five diet pills that work and are highly recommended to tackle the overweight condition. Your finances will of course be a determining factor of which pills to go for, and here is a very important message before you embark on a weight loss program using diet pills or any other medication for that matter:

Always get some advice from a medical practitioner to ensure you don’t put your health at risk!!

Biotin and Hair Growth

Ed Hardy

There are a few options available to both men and women for treating hair loss and one of these is “Biotin”. In fact doctors recommend Biotin as a vitamin for hair and nails and for treating hair loss.

What is Biotin good for?

Biotin is a B Vitamin essential for boosting energy which in turn is driven by the formation of fatty acids and glucose. Furthermore, Biotin also helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and it is a natural nutritional supplement that helps restore hair loss and keep skin and nails looking healthy.

What are the main sources of Biotin?

The B Vitamin Biotin is found in rich foods such as soy, milk, egg yolks, liver, kidneys, cheese, butter, poultry, cauliflower, bananas, watermelon, peas, brewer’s yeast, nuts, beans, oat bran, salmon, and mackerel. Biotin is a complex vitamin used for the production of fatty acids and the release of energy from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

As mentioned before, the purpose of Vitamin B is to maintain metabolism. In fact our growth and replication of cells depends on Biotin. Although Biotin is good for healthy and strong hair, some medical specialists also recommend using additional vitamins such as choline, frolic acid, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. People with a high cholesterol reading should definitely consider Biotin.

What about Biotin deficiency?

Frequent consumption of raw egg white can lead to Biotin deficiency, because it contains a protein which blocks the absorption of Biotin. Furthermore, genetic disorders of Biotin deficiency, infant seborrheic dermatitis, surgical removal of the stomach and excessive alcohol consumption may increase the requirement for Biotin.  Generally though, Biotin deficiency is not that common, but if it is it can lead to skin rashes, high cholesterol, nausea, depression, anorexia and heart problems.

What are the recommendations?

Regards hair loss and to keep hair loss from developing further, researcher Andrew Lessman suggests 2mg of Biotin per day. People suffering from hair loss should use medications with a Biotin substance in addition to eating Biotin rich foods, as mentioned above, to maintain an average level of Biotin. Some shampoos with a Biotin content can also stimulate hair growth. To keep our hair healthy and strong, our body needs thousands of calories daily, hence eating Biotin rich foods and dietary supplements is essential and often recommended by dermatologists.

What are the Biotin side effects or concerns?

The negative effects of Biotin are that it has not proved to be 100% effective and it is more effective when taken with other B Vitamins.

The safety of Biotin supplements  or Biotin capsules is not completely known for people with a history of seizures, liver or kidney disease, children and pregnant women and should therefore not be used unless under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner. Also, before taking a dose of Biotin, do some research or consult a dermatologist and learn about the product so that the combination of Biotin with other prescription drugs does not cause a problem or result in Biotin deficiency.

Since Biotin is a natural vitamin and a herbal nutritional product one would not expect the supplements to be harmful, but the facts are that Biotin is not FDA approved and therefore any trial is at your own risk.

How to Quit Smoking without the Weight Gain

Quit smoking is, if you have not tried it before, considered to be one of the hardest habits to kick. Though once you think through the logics of smoking you will see there is no logic….it’s all in the mind!..your body does not need it….most definitely not! On the contrary, when you start smoking you can see that your body fights against it and you start coughing and spluttering.

I’ve been there and I have tried a few times to quit smoking and now finally I have quit smoking for good. As we all know, the dangers of lighting up just one more, especially when having a drink or when stressed out, can quickly re-ignite this nasty habit. However, after a while your urge dissipates and there is no more urge…on the contrary you will not even want to smell cigarette smoke. So rule number one is, no matter how stressed, no matter how many drinks you have had, no matter what your best friend says…”c’mon just one”..NO!..NO!…NO!..Don’t even entertain this thought in the slightest…NO!

300x250_start_button_girl

So how can I stop smoking?

Here is your quit smoking tip number 1 – If you are a smoker and want to make that change to a healthier lifestyle the first thing you have to do is strip that habit from your system…annihilate it..not inhale it! I quit smoking while I had a lit cigarette next to me and I was reading an article about what smoking does to your lungs and your arteries. My mother just had a stroke from blocked arteries and I did not want to go down that path. I was so disgusted to see how smoking systematically ruins your life and health with other people, that I quit on the spot, from one minute to the next. My pack of cigarettes landed in the trash can and there was no turning back for me. This was not something I had planned like “I will quit on new years day” or I will quit when my husband or boyfriend quits….none of that…this is MY LIFE and unless I take care of my own body and health……..in the end, no one will and you are all alone..so do yourself a favor – QUIT SMOKING RIGHT NOW..while you read this…and we have not even started with the disgusting part of what smoking does to your body and life.

My arguments for quitting smoking were quite simple and when I think back I should have done it long ago, but hindsight is always 20:20 vision. When I see people smoking today and when I saw myself smoking, I thought..how stupid is this, here you light a cigarette and suck on it…I mean that alone is pathetic….not only that but all your clothes smell, your fingers, your breath, your skin and there is nothing, absolutely nothing that makes it look cool or sexy. Some people really think it does looks cool to light a cigarette, wear sunglasses, talk on the mobile phone and drive a car all at the same time….wow…sexy right?….WRONG!. Now look at it from another angle, because every coin has two sides right…. does it look cool when you have a cough that does not go away any more, you run out of breath just walking up the stairs, your lungs are doing overtime with every little movement and you are slowly killing yourself ….just to look cool????..c’mon that can’t be right!….so try to look at what smoking does to you and there is no excuse in the world which could justify that smoking and nicotine is cool or sexy. There are ways to quit, but you must commit yourself to quit smoking and there are also ways to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time….again it requires commitment.….sorry, smoking is not sexy and cool that is absolute bull!!!

One argument which you may try to justify your smoking habit is..”oh,  I will gain weight”…sorry honey, that is a weak argument for slowly killing yourself with smoking. Yes it is true that, if you do not do anything you will increase your appetite and gain weight, but my argument is …you already made this life changing decision to QUIT SMOKING FOR GOOD, a habit which once kicked, will definitely open a new chapter in your life. So now you have to create a positive healthy habit in exchange.

Cigarettes stimulate the metabolism and according to therapists, your body burns 250 calories with every pack of cigarettes you  smoke. When you stop smoking the body metabolism slows down resulting in fewer calories being burnt, thus adding that extra weight to your body. Some people gain 1-2 kilos once they quit for 2 weeks and for many that may be a reason to start smoking again, just to prevent gaining more weight and your good decision to stop smoking is out the window.

Remember one thing though, your metabolism adjusts itself eventually and will normalize, so don’t give up giving up that easy. Also remember what favors you are doing to yourself and how your body will thank you over time as, it slowly flushes out all the toxins to free up your lungs, arteries and your heart and your organs start re-generating new cells. That is not all…..no..you will also see changes in your appearance…your skin will look fresh and healthy, yellow stains around your fingers and finger nails will disappear, your breath will be more pleasant, your gums will look healthier and your teeth will stop discoloring from nicotine. Now that is sexy!!

Get into a good skin care routine to help clean out all the toxins which your body will expel after smoking and clean the pores in your face with the right soaps and cosmetics. I could go on and on and on…I am also sure that you yourself also know that this is true, but you may shy away from a decision to stop smoking because you question “How do I lose weight and quit smoking ?” In a nutshell, think about all the health advantages you gain from a healthy smoke free life and how you will feel inside and then think what a small price you are paying with a few extra pounds…more importantly these extra pounds can only be temporary until your body and metabolism adjusts and gets you back to your normal weight..definitely healthier, healthier looking and exuding confidence..because you kicked it!..You kicked one of the most difficult habits one can kick…you made it!…you made the best decision ever, which was  to quit smoking!!

300x250_start_button_girl

My quit smoking rule number two is one when you kick a habit, any habit for that matter, you will need to find an alternative to “fill that gap”. From my personal experience, when I had the urge to smoke I went for a long walk or workout and now, part of my daily routine is to go swimming. That not only is one of the best exercises for your body, because there is little strain on any joints, apart from the shoulder joints, but you also burn a lot of calories without stressing. I lost weight within a month! …what a great swap of habits!

Another stop smoking tip and option you may consider as an alternative, if you are not the type that likes to do your own sport, is join a yoga class for example or take your dog for a walk or join a swimming class. You see all this is to get you to a) not think about cigarettes and b) to burn calories and change your habits.

Ed Hardy

Another important thing, to lessen your cravings for a cigarette, drink lots of water…lots! That not only keeps you hydrated but also flushes out your toxins and the added advantage is that when your tummy is full of water you will not be able to eat that much. As far as food is concerned, you will have new cravings for specific food, but be careful how you indulge. Don’t go for junk food…that will not make you healthier because you will just substitute one bad habit with another bad habit. So don’t go for sugar rich and unhealthy foods, go for healthy fruit and eat lots of that, seafood and vegetables and lean meats. Also look at foods high in fiber and calcium rich foods. Read up on some healthy eating tips to steer you in the right direction and you will see how enjoyable and healthy your life can be without smoking, both inside and outside.

To succeed in this life changing event you will have to have a very focused mind and fight the challenging moments which will tempt you to start smoking again. You can do it, just always keep saying to yourself…”how ridiculous is it to suck on a cigarette”..”there is absolutely nothing cool and nothing sexy about smoking”….once you pass day 1, then day 2, then day 3, it gets easier and easier. After a while you may think, ok I have it under control now and you may want to relapse, but say to yourself…NO!….NO!…NO!… you have just managed the most difficult part, do not give up giving up now !………at the end of the day, congratulate yourself, treat yourself and enjoy your new smoke free life…..well done…now you are sexy!!

Women and Hair Thinning

728x90_start_button_girl

Are you currently puzzled and questioning why, every time you wash or comb your hair, the sink or shower is full of your hair?…can you see that your hair is falling out and thinning rapidly, yet you cannot explain why this is happing to you?….worst thing is, you are not in your 50’s or older, which may be more understandable when this happens at that age, but you are just in your 20’s. ….all I can say is you are not alone, in fact there can be many reasons why women even in their 20’s and 30’s suffer from hair fallout and thinning.

Ads By CbproAds

You see, with men it is easier to recognize hair loss patterns and it happens a lot more often to men, in fact men, in general, begin to lose their hair a lot earlier than women. If and when women lose their hair, under normal healthy circumstances, it is not until they reach the age of 50 or even later. One cannot compare the hair loss patterns of women and thinning hairs with that of men.

Now the rightful question for you is why does it happen to me at my young age and how can I prevent or manage further hair loss or hair thinning and what hair thinning treatment or hair thickening products are available.

Firstly don’t be alarmed if you see your hair thinning at your young age especially if that is the result of some illness or pregnancy. Hair loss during pregnancy is not unusual, likewise with hair thinning. Another well known fact is that if you are ill and are undergoing some treatment, especially if we are talking about chemotherapy treatments, hair thinning in women or even complete hair loss during that treatment period is not unusual.

As mentioned before, hair loss or hair thinning in women cannot be compared to that with men. Women generally start thinning hairs or losing hair around the age of 50 or later. In fact some women and men for that matter, have such strong hair growth that they never experience hair thinning all their life, no matter how old they are.

If you feel it to be unusual that you are suffering from hair thinning, especially if you are neither pregnant nor suffering from any illness, you should probably consult a specialist to get an accurate diagnosis. Sure you can try self diagnosis, but unless you are a specialist yourself, self diagnosis may be misleading and bring you to a wrong conclusion.

Have you heard of the term “Androgenetic Alopecia” ?

Androgenetic Alopecia (also known as androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica) is a medical condition and the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women. Unlike the men hair loss patterns, women do not follow the same path. When women suffer from Androgenetic Alopecia their hair thins all over the head and their hair line does not recede like in men, nor does it lead to complete baldness.

There are a few potential factors which  can lead to androgenetic alopecia including genetic and possibly environmental factors. Research has shown that hair loss patterns are related to hormones called “androgens” and one particular androgen called “dihydrotestosterone” (DHT). Regulating hair growth and sex drive are just a couple of important functions, for both men and women, which are attributed to androgens.

Another possible cause for hair thinning, not caused by any particular hair loss pattern is “Trichotillomania”, an impulse controlled disorder. It is a disorder where men and women have this urge to pull out their own hair due to stress or depression and it is chronic and often difficult to treat.

Alopecia Areata also sometimes called “spot baldness” is another hair loss condition which is thought to be an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks it’s own hair follicles, hence suppresses hair growth.

Then we have triangular alopecia which is only a temporary loss and scarring alopecia or “cicatricial alopecia” which is a more serious condition as it leads to permanent hair loss. Cicatricial alopecia is a rare disorder which destroys the hair follicle and replaces it with scar tissue.

Las but not least we have a disorder called Telogen effluvium which may be due to a variety of causes including chronic illnesses, severe emotional disorders, diets or drug related, just to name a few.

Saline Breast Implants vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Divissima

Many women dream about having bigger breasts and going for a boob job and are ready to pay thousands of dollars to get the perfect c and gain breast size.

Before you embark on your mission of breast implants surgery think about the alternative options and look at breast enlargement naturally with a proven product such as Breast Actives.

Here are some reasons why using the Breast Actives solution to enhance your breasts naturally may sound very attractive to you.

Breast enlargement surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), was the fourth most popular invasive surgical procedure among cosmetic plastic surgeries performed in 2000. In a press release dated July 12, 2001, the ASPS says that breast augmentation was performed on 212,500 women last year…..and this was 10 years ago

Meanwhile, millions of women have been subjected to the ill effects of these modern day vanity contraptions that were bought in good faith. ….consider that in comparison the Breast Actives Solution is non-invasive and also provides a full money back guarantee.

Remember!!

Silicone gel implants were banned in 1992 by FDA.

If you have (or had) a ruptured silicone breast implant, you will be denied Health Insurance Coverage.

Saline-filled implants tend to have a higher rate of leaking and deflation than silicone gel implants, which means more frequent surgery to replace them.

In a study published in the Lancet medical journal, Dr Lori Brown of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says: “There is emerging consensus that both the incidence and prevalence of breast-implant rupture are much higher than previously suspected.”

21% overall increase in cancers for women with implants, compared to women of the same age in the general population.

Implant patients were three times as likely to die from lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia as other plastic surgery patients. The study is based on medical records and death certificates of almost 8,000 women with breast implants, including silicone gel implants and saline implants, and more than 2,000 other plastic surgery patients. ( National Cancer Institute (NCI), Boston University, Abt Associates, and the Food and Drug Administration, with Dr. Louise Brinton from NCI as lead author. )

Risks of Breast Implants

Divissima

Have you ever dreamed of having the perfect C ?…..are you thinking about going for a boob job and getting breast implants just to have the perfect C? ….are you currently considering cosmetic surgery to gain breast volume ?

Many women dream of having the perfect C size breast and getting a boob job to achieve their dreams but before you opt for breast augmentation surgery make sure that you understand the risks of breast implants, otherwise the suffering, if things go wrong will never be worth the exercise just to gain breast volume.

Did you know that 3% of patients who have gone for breast augmentation surgery suffer some leakage within three years of surgery causing deflated implants?

Occasionally, breast implants may break or leak. With Saline implants, the saline fill is salt water and that will be absorbed by the body without ill side effects. However Silicon implants, as the name says, have silicone gel and if this leaks one of two things can happen.

Now this is very important so please read this carefully. Regardless of any operation, scar tissue forms around all implants and it is a natural part of the healing process. The scar tissue itself around any breast implant is not an issue unless it starts tightening  at which point your breast may feel firmer and more unnatural and even painful. When the silicon implant breaks and the silicon leaks into the surrounding tissues it feels like the implant is deflating. The leaking silicon gel may collect in the breast and a new scar may form around it. Alternatively it may migrate through the lymphatic system and other areas of the body. This may require a second operation and a full replacement of the leaking silicon implant. The dangers of a silicone implant leaking and migrating to other parts of the body is that it may not be possible to remove all the silicone gel. This silicone gel is what some say is related to connective tissue disorders. Connective tissues are the structural portions of our body that essentially hold the cells of the body together and these tissues form the framework for your body.

What are the causes for boob implants, be it a silicon implant or a saline implant to rupture or deflate?

Some of the possible causes include:

  • Damage by surgical instruments during the breast implant surgery
  • Over filling or under filling of the saline implant with saline solution (this only applies for saline filled breast implants)
  • Capsular contracture – a condition where the fibrous capsule surrounding a breast implant tightens or thickens causing excessive firmness and distortion of the breast
  • Closed capsulotomy -  compression from the outside of the breast in an attempt to break up scar tissue and release the scar tissue of the capsule. This is a procedure which  is not recommended by doctors and strongly advised against by the manufacturers of the breast implants due to risk of breast implant rupture.
  • Stress such as trauma or intense physical manipulation
  • Excessive compression of breasts during mammography imaging
  • Placement through umbilical incision
  • Site injury to the breast
  • Normal aging of breast implants
  • Unknown or unexplained reasons

The FDA completed a retrospective study on ruptures of silicone breast implants. This study performed in Birmingham, Alabama, included women who had their first breast implant before 1988. The women with silicon breast implants had an MRI examination of both breasts to determine of their breast implants. In this study, the 344 women who received an MRI examination had a total of 687 breast implants and of these 687 breast implants at least two of the three radiologist participating in that study agreed that 378 breast implants were ruptured (55%). Extrapolating from that, this means that 69% of the 344 women participating in the study, had at least one ruptured breast implant. Furthermore, taking this study a bit further, of the 344 women, 73 women or 21% had extracapsular silicone gel in one or both breasts. Factors which can contribute to breast implant rupture include increasing age of the breast implant, the manufacturer of the breast implant and sub-muscular rather than sub-glandular location of the breast implant.

The most common complication of breast implants is capsular contracture, which as mentioned above is a condition where the fibrous capsule surrounding a breast implant tightens or thickens causing excessive firmness and distortion of the breast. The only choice is to settle for additional surgery to remove the scar tissue or to remove—and perhaps replace—the breast implant.

In contrast to the silicon breast implant study, a prospective clinical study of saline breast implants conducted by Mentor, the cumulative, 3-year, by patient rates of a first occurrence of capsular contracture Grades III and IV were 9% for the 1264 augmentation patients and 30% for the 416 reconstruction patients.

A further prospective clinical study of saline breast implants conducted by McGhan, the cumulative, 3-year, by patient rates of a first occurrence of capsular contracture Grades III and IV were 9% for the 901 augmentation patients and 25% for the 237 reconstruction patients.  For more information…click here!
